During this tour we will walk upstream: from the Rhein, through St.Alban-Tal and the Breite, past Gellert and Schwarzpark, under a highway and over a busy road, all the way to St.Jakob-on-the-Birs.  We will follow St.Alban-Teich - an artificial canal constructed in the 12th century, by the monks of the St.Alban monastery, to bring water from the river Birs and power dozens of mills, including those used to make paper. Visible for the most part still today, our experience of the canal varies as we progress through urban spaces that have developed along its banks during the past centuries - from the idyllic St.Alban-Tal to the green promenade by the Gellert, to graffiti-walled tunnel under the highway and a waterway running parallel to the road at the busy St.Jakob ... during the tour we will explore all of these areas, discuss their history and address plans for their future development.

Those interested in following St.Alban-Teich further can continue through Brüglingen, all the way to Neue Welt and the Birs weir.
