Most of us are well acquainted with Basel's street maps - they help us get from one place to another. Yet a variety of other 2D representations can reveal much more about the city.
An exhibition shown last year in Basel's "Bau- und Verkehrsdepartement" offered a collage of various map layers. In addition to aerial views, one could see large-scale maps depicting plot and property lines, infrastructure, as well as Basel maps from the beginning of the 20th c.
Although this exhibition is now over, these and many more variously themed maps can be viewed online - www.stadtplan.bs.ch/geoviewer offers access to a plethora of information.
"BAUM KATASTER" map gives location and Latin names for all the trees planted in Basel-Stadt - e.g., Aesculus Hippocastanum can be found on the Münsterplatz as well as in many other places.
ORTSBILD- & DENKMALSCHUTZ map displays the city's inventory of historical monuments and buildings worthy of preservation..
SOLARPOTENZIAL map shows how suitable each of the buildings is for the use of solar energy.
Interestingly, one can also view Basel in terms of its inhabitants' NET WEALTH. Maps with demographic distribution of Baslers' income as well as its welfare recipients (with a few areas exempted, in both cases!) are also given.
AUSLÄNDERANTEIL map shows Basel in terms of its foreign population - ranging from less than 20% to more than 50%!
